The Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD) developed its Schoolyard Outdoor Learning & Greening Standards in collaboration with district leaders, school staff, and community partners to create a shared vision for enhancing school grounds. These standards promote inclusive, nature-based spaces that support well-being, learning, and environmental connection. The first pilot, completed at Vargas Elementary School, features a native plant learning garden, sensory and therapy areas, shaded seating, redwood grove gathering spaces, berms, flagstone paths, and game-striped asphalt. This project launches a broader district effort to transform schoolyards into vibrant, flexible, and equitable outdoor environments.
