UCSF Walnut Creek is an outpatient children’s surgical center with an extensive sports medicine & physical therapy program. Tasked with extensive program needs, but with little available space, Carducci Associates developed a design that allowed programmed areas to overlap, allowing the aggregate of defined uses to exceed the plaza’s small space. Client program needs such as a physical therapy track, eating area, event plaza, and a play area, all overlap to allow each space to function for at least two uses without conflict. Children play on the rolling turf mound, run on the track, & explore the whimsical design, yet never realize it is therapeutic because they are too busy having fun outdoors.
