Bay Farm School

The Bay Farm school project involved the addition of two new permanent classrooms to the campus which created the opportunity for an outdoor learning and passive recreation area. Using non-infill synthetic turf, the area’s focal point is the grassy berms constructed for a hang-out place that the students may use for multiple purposes. Pivoting around these landforms is low water use screen planting to create a sense of space as well as to visually separate from the neighboring park. At a request from the District, a variety of fruiting orchard trees were added as a teaching tool and to harvest the obvious reward. An outdoor classroom completes the space with a portable learning board for flexibility and an array of seating opportunities. Hardcourt improvements complement the renovations and the dedicated secured bicycle parking area was relocated to improve functionality. The result was immediately apparent with children highly engaged in all facets of the new layout.
