The Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD) Schoolyard Outdoor Learning & Greening Standards were developed collaboratively with input from district leaders, school administrators, and community partners. These standards represent a shared commitment to transforming school grounds into inclusive, natural spaces where students, staff, and the community feel welcome, engaged, and connected. Designed to be flexible and responsive, the standards support equitable access to diverse learning and recreational opportunities, promote physical and mental well-being, and foster a deeper connection to the natural environment. Guided by this vision, our team is currently applying these standards to all schools within the district. José Antonio Vargas Elementary School served as the pilot project and was completed in 2025. The remaining 10 schoolyards - now in the construction documentation phase - will feature shaded seating, natural play areas, native landscaping, and sustainable stormwater systems to reduce heat and enhance biodiversity. It is anticipated that all the schoolyard projects will be complete by Fall 2026.
