Huntington Park

Located at the top of one of the most famous hills in San Francisco, Huntington Park sits adjacent to the California Street Cable Car line and is surrounded by Grace Cathedral, the historic Flood Mansion, and five-star hotels. Users of the park include morning exercisers, families and children, tourists and hotel visitors, and on the evenings and weekends, local dog owners who gather here with their dogs to socialize.

Respect of the surrounding historic park and neighborhood, attention to the weather, safety, and accessibility were important to the renovation design of the park playground. The play space incorporates a cathedral theme in the play structure design. The ground plane of rubber and artificial turf play surfaces emphasize safety and allow the play area to match the surrounding brick, concrete, and grass areas, while minimizing surface maintenance and discouraging the park's many four-legged visitors from utilizing the playground as a pit stop. The play surfaces dry quickly, maximizing use and mitigating the foggy conditions. The specially designed play structure incorporates bridges, towers, slides, and musical chimes that encourage discovery and narrative play, further enhancing the playground experience.
